How to participate in the BioMARathon Catalonia

From the first Saturday of May to October 15 2025, take part in the BioMARathon and help collect essential scientific data for the knowledge and conservation of marine ecosystems in Catalonia.

Can you help us to identify species?

If you are an expert in species identification, help us verify the fauna and flora observations that our community uploads to MINKA!

Your contribution will enable the BioMARathon databases to attain the Research Degree, thus guaranteeing their usefulness for scientific purposes and territorial and biodiversity management.

There is a prize for taking part!

There are 5 categories of participation:

  1. General
  2. Barcelona
  3. Girona
  4. Tarragona
  5. Random
Requirements
  • Be over 18 years old.
  • Have a personal account on the MINKA citizen science platform.
  • Upload a minimum of 10 different observations to MINKA along the costs of Catalonia during the period.
  • The observations must reach the research status and be included in the BioMARathon project within the MINKA platform. Observations with blurred or unidentifiable photos will not be accepted. Duplicate observations or several photos belonging to the same individual will be discarded.
  • Each participant may only compete for one prize.
Participation period

The participation period is from the first Saturday of May at 00:01 am to 15 October 2025 at 23:59 pm (Spanish peninsular time).

Observations can be submitted to MINKA up to 15 days after the end of the deadline, but all of them must include the observation date within the BioMARathon period.

Exclusions
  • People who submit their observations to MINKA from an account of an organisation, company or institution.
  • People employed by or linked to the institutions organising or collaborating with the BioMARathon.
